Happy Women in Construction Week!
Infinity Properties relies on the quality assurance efforts of Shauna and Andrea to ensure that our homes are handed over to new homeowners with a high level of finish. Shauna and Andrea are responsible for repairing minor blemishes, coordinating trades to complete deficient work, and “polishing” the homes as the finishing touch of Infinity’s quality management program. Their roles are exceedingly important, and we value their efforts!
We took some time to dive into their time and experience in the construction industry – here’s what they had to say:
What led you both to careers in the construction industry?
Andrea: At first it was a means to an end to pay the bills, but after meeting good people and mentors I realized there was an opportunity to grow a career in construction and eventually moved into a site foreman role.
Shauna: I was a manufacturing engineer back in Ireland, and so a job in construction seemed more natural to me than in hospitality. I started in general labour, trained in quality assurance, and am now a quality assurance coordinator.
What do you enjoy most about construction?
Andrea: I like being a part of the construction process and seeing people living in the homes I helped build.
Shauna: I enjoy the various opportunities to gain basic knowledge of the different trade disciplines, and carrying them over into my everyday life.
What has been the most challenging part of being a woman in a male-dominated industry?
Andrea: Having concepts explained to me that I am already knowledgeable in!
Shauna: Being addressed separately from others in a meeting. I’m okay with being one of the guys.
Do you have any words of encouragement or wise words for other women thinking about a career in construction?
Andrea: If you like learning practical skills and the idea of being able to grow a career, construction has a lot to offer if you put the work in.
Shauna: Don’t use the port-a-john! But really, the same as what Andrea said – there is a lot of opportunity in construction if you’re willing to balance some of the harder elements of the industry such as working in the weather.
Thank you, Shauna and Andrea, for being such an important part of the Infinity Properties Construction team! Check out our website to learn more about our other Infinity team members.
