Northern BC is home to some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world. In fact, the sights are so unreal, it’s earned the title of “Supernatural British Columbia,” thanks to its spectacular landscapes filled with 2000-year-old trees, impressive mountain peaks, crashing oceans, and of course, stunning hiking trails. While many trails can be enjoyed any time of year, the fall season is one of the best. The crisp autumn air combined with the colourful leaves dotting the trails and treetops are not a sight to be missed. To ensure you get the most out of Northern BC’s fleeting fall weather, here are 6 hiking trails near Prince George to check out this season:
1. The Ancient Forest Trail
This one-of-a-kind trail is right out of a storybook – or a Jurassic Park movie minus the dinos (sorry!). It’s home to moss covered, ancient red cedar trees that are approximately 2,000 years old and is the only inland wet-temperate rainforest in the world, that we know of. This trail features comprehensive and high-quality boardwalks throughout to appeal to avid and amateur hikers alike, and even features a waterfall for your viewing pleasure. Located in the district of Fraser-Fort George, the Ancient Forest/ Chun T’oh Whudujut Provincial Park is just east of Prince George.
2. Teapot Mountain
This trail is worth visiting for the name alone. Like the nursey rhyme, this hike is short but definitely not stout. Totalling at 1.4km, you will gain 800m of elevation in a brief 30-minute climb. Built for sure-footed adventurers, the especially steep spots have tree-anchored ropes to help you navigate safely. Trust us when we say, the stunning views are worth the fire in your calf muscles as you take in the beauty of Summit Lake and its surrounding wetlands. Located just 45 minutes north of Prince George, you can catch the sunset and be home in time for evening tea. So, ready to “get all steamed up” and so the world can “hear [you] shout”? Then Teapot Mountain is the hike for you.
3. Eskers Provincial Park
A must-see for prime fall views is Eskers Provincial Park. Located just 40km northwest of Prince George, this park features gently rolling hills and gorgeous fall foliage. Catch the beautiful autumn colours reflected in the enchanting small lakes dotted throughout the area. Ideal for families of all ages, the trails are well-defined and curve around Pine March with a 3km loop, or you can take the 6km trail to Kathie Lake. The name ‘Eskers’ refers to the landforms that are created from the meltwater of ancient glaciers, a unique and special feature of this BC park. While it’s especially beautiful in the fall, this area can be enjoyed year-round for fishing, canoeing, wildlife viewing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.
4. Hellroaring Falls
Short but sweet, this trail moves upstream along the river where you can marvel at the moss-covered forest brimming with old growth hemlock. A true fairy tale location, take your time to really absorb all the natural beauty this area has to offer. The hike is steep at first, with ropes being incorporated for assistance; however, the trail quickly levels out to feature a stunning walk near the end. After walking through the mossy trees, you’ll need to carefully (VERY carefully) work your way down some slippery rocks to get to the falls. Take your time and make sure to wear the right, grippy shoes to avoid injury. When you reach the falls, you’ll see the beautiful aquamarine blue water gushing down the rocky landscape; a serene and refreshing end to any hike. Located 2 hours East of Prince George, this trail is best for more confident, experienced hikers.
5. Cranbrook Hill Greenway Trails
Looking to enjoy fall wilderness within the city limits? The Cranbrook Hill Greenway has everything you need to take in fresh, forest air while remaining close to home. The Greenway features over 25km of multi-use trails, connecting the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), Otway Ski Centre, Forests of the World, and Parkridge Creek. Bursting with protected wildlife, you can pick and choose which trail(s) you want to explore or suit up for the entire 25km. Perfect for students, locals, families, and tourists, this trail is a great way to squeeze in some nature, no matter how jam-packed your schedule is.
6. Moore’s Meadow
Moore is more, especially when it comes to the fall beauty of this must-see meadow. Experience vibrant autumn colours firsthand throughout this 5km hike. Explore four trails (Mary Fallis, Ridge, Kettle, & East Trails), all of which circle a large glacial kettle that was formed during the Ice Ages. Follow the trail for optimal viewing, as it’s the only access to many unique and fascinating eco-systems found within the park. A natural getaway found within the city limits, this area is popular for hikers, bikers, and dog-owners. In fact, the meadow is one of the only off-leash locations in the city; however, the trails remain on-leash only.
